What’s Next for Washington State Initiatives

According to Let’s Go Washington, the initiatives for 2026 – Protecting Fairness in Girls’ Sports and Strengthen Communication Between Parents and Schools – have been turned into the Secretary of State (SOS). The office is going through the 861,388 signatures turned in and verifying them for the next few weeks. LGW, a non-partisan organization, said that over 57% of signers were Democrat or Independent.

Once the signatures are verified, one of three actions can be taken. The initiatives can be sent to the Washington State Legislature where legislators could have the opportunity to pass the initiatives or amend and create their own initiative, or the initiatives could go to the voters in November. However, Democratic leaders in the State Legislature are saying they won’t hold hearings on them. This all but guarantees the measures will go before voters this fall.

Initiative IL 26-126 that would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote fell short of the required number of votes. According to Jim Walsh, Washington State Republican Party Chairman and a state Legislator, a replacement initiative will be filed with the State in January with a signature deadline of June. If enough signatures are obtained, the initiative will go to the people on the November ballot.
