PCO Information

Precinct Committee Officers (PCOs) are the foundation of the Party. They are elected or appointed and represent the precinct or area where they live. The term of office for a PCO is two years. If a vacancy occurs in the office (caused by death, disqualification, resignation, or failure to elect), the Chairperson of the BCRP can appoint a PCO to the vacant position.

Captains support the PCO in managing their precinct and are appointed to help. Captains do not have to live in the PCOs precinct and Captains may support more than one precinct.

While Captains and guests are encouraged to regularly attend the Central Committee monthly meetings, only the PCO’s are able to vote

Every 2 years (in even years) elections are held for PCOs. If no one runs against a declared PCO candidate in the given precinct, the candidate automatically becomes the elected PCO starting in December of that year.

If there are two or more candidates running, they are listed on the August Primary ballot for just that precinct and the person with the most votes becomes the new PCO. If no one runs, the precinct remains open and a PCO can be appointed as early as the following January.

As members of the BCRP Central Committee, PCOs represent their precincts and attend and have voting rights at the Central Committee meetings. They

  • Communicate with and represent the people in their precinct, helping inform and elect good candidates
  • Register voters (see Voter Registration Guide)
  • Get out the vote by walking or calling your precinct, neighbors, and providing flyers and information
  • Help recruit good candidates for office
  • Serve as a mentor to others helping educate and encourage them
  • Serve on a BCRP committee
  • Assist in Precinct Caucus meetings and serve as delegates to the County and State Conventions.

Any registered Washington State voter with a residential address in Benton County that is a member of the Republican Party can become a PCO candidate. A PCO candidate files an online Declaration of Candidacy form. In Washington State, voters do not register to vote by political party nor are write-in votes allowed. Therefore, a PCO candidate must declare himself/herself to be a member of the Republican Party at the time of filing. In addition, the BCRP has an attestation form that the Precinct Committee Officer must sign that states they are a Republican and agree to support our BCRP Platform.

To locate which precinct and legislative district you live in, check out the Benton County GIS Map and search on your address. Right mouse click on the parcel and you will see a list of information, including the precinct number and legislative district.

To learn more about becoming a PCO, fill out the form in red below. If your precinct has a PCO you might be eligible to be a captain. A Captain is someone who supports the PCO in their precinct and does not have to live in the precinct. They help inform voters, put up signs, and can fill in as proxy for the PCO when they are gone.
